Checkers

Checkers, also known as draughts, is a two-player board game that is played on an 8×8 square board with alternating light and dark squares. Each player begins with 12 pieces placed on the three rows closest to them, on the dark squares. The objective of the game is to capture all of the opponent’s pieces or block them so they cannot move.

Players take turns moving a piece diagonally forward to an adjacent unoccupied square. If an opponent’s piece is adjacent and the square beyond it is vacant, a jump can be made to capture that piece. If a player can make a capture, it is a mandatory move. When a piece reaches the farthest row from the player, it is “kinged” and can then move both forward and backward.

The game of checkers is known for its simple rules but complex strategic depth. It is a game of forced moves where the player must jump if they can, leading to a high level of strategy and foresight required to outmaneuver the opponent.
