Pandemic: Reign of Cthulu

“Pandemic: Reign of Cthulhu” is a cooperative board game that blends the classic disease-fighting gameplay of “Pandemic” with the eldritch horror themes of H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos. Designed by Matt Leacock and Chuck D. Yager, players take on the roles of investigators in the 1920s, working together to prevent the awakening of the Great Old Ones.

The game replaces diseases with spreading cultists, Shoggoths, and four evil gods that players must prevent from being summoned. Instead of curing diseases, players close gates to other dimensions and fight off insanity that afflicts their characters. As in the original Pandemic, the game is won or lost as a group, requiring teamwork and strategic planning to fend off the mounting supernatural threats.

The board features iconic locations from the Lovecraftian world, and the game’s progression is marked by an escalating sense of impending doom, as the difficulty increases with each awakened Old One. Player characters have unique abilities that offer advantages in the fight against the otherworldly forces.

“Pandemic: Reign of Cthulhu” is acclaimed for successfully translating the tension and teamwork of “Pandemic” into a fresh, thematic context, providing a thrilling experience for both fans of cooperative board games and Lovecraftian horror.
